Emily Baker wins CNYAPG award

NRT Trainee Emily Baker has won the 2016 Central New York Association of Professional Geologists (CNYAPG) Grant for Student Research.

Her project, entitled “Infrared Imaging and Modeling of Proglacial Stream Temperature in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru” was ranked first among qualified applicants and earned her an award of $1,000 to assist in the continuation of her research.

Kristina Gutchess to speak at WAGGS

Earth Science PhD student and NRT trainee, Kristy Gutchess, will be discussing her research at WAGGS on Friday, March 11. The talk, entitled “Evaluating Iodine as a natural tracer in surface water and groundwater,” is at 3:30 pm in 210 Heroy. Refreshments will be provided.

AAAS Science Communication Workshop Scheduled: Save the Date!

EMPOWER NRT and Soft Interfaces IGERT @ SU are very pleased to arrange the workshop “Communicating Science: Tools for Scientists and Engineers.” This interactive workshop is organized and facilitated by The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

The workshop is scheduled for Friday, April 22 from 9 am until noon and is followed by a 1-hour lunchtime seminar entitled “Communicating Science and Engaging the Public.”

Breakfast with Carol Frost

Carol Frost, Director of NSF’s Earth Science Division, will be visiting campus March 3 & 4. Her seminar, entitled “Funding science to sustain society,” will be at 4:00 PM in 113 Heroy.

Friday morning, from 8:30-10:00 AM, the EMPOWER NRT program is hosting a breakfast with Carol Frost for graduate students at Rachel’s restaurant in the Sheraton Hotel, near Marshall Street. This will provide students an opportunity to meet her in a small group setting and ask questions about NSF and/or her career path. The breakfast is open to all EAR and EMPOWER graduate students. Alex Johnson wins award

NRT Trainee Alex Johnson  was named the 2015 TranLIVE Student of the Year.  Alex’s research focuses the fate and transport of pollutants in urban environments. He is also interested in the role of green roofs and other green infrastructure in affecting air and stormwater quality.

TranLIVE, which stands for Transportation Livability by Integrating Vehicles and the Environment,  is a federally funded University transportation research center that consists of a consortium of five University members including SU, University of Idaho, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion, and University of Southern Texas.

Laura DeMott discusses her outreach work

NRT Trainee Laura DeMott is the speaker at WAGGS this upcoming Friday (Feb. 12).  Laura is a doctoral student in the Earth Sciences department and has done extensive outreach work. She will be discussing her experiences in her talk, which is titled The GeoFORCE Awakens: Enticing the next generation of geoscientists to the STEM side.

WAGGS, the Waggoner Geology Graduate Seminar, provides opportunities for graduate students to share their research with their colleagues in an informal, low-stress environment. WAGGS starts at 3:30 in 210 Heroy Geology Lab. Refreshments are served and all are welcome.
