Rwandan Field Course
This course will engage EMPOWER students in field research as part of an interdisciplinary team working in challenging conditions. Students will travel to Lake Kivu, Rwanda, in the African Great Rift Valley, to study processes of hydrocarbon source rock formation, unique methods of fossil fuel extraction, and energy solutions used in the developing world. The course is designed to prepare students technically in their fields of study, but also to provide preparation for careers requiring intensive collaboration.

EMPOWER NRT trainee Geoff Millard will present early findings on mercury levels in fish from Lake Kivu, Rwanda today at 4 pm in Link 152. Geoff, along with his advisor, Dr. Charles Driscoll, and a dozen other EMPOWER trainees and leadership faculty returned from the EMPOWER field course in Africa mid-June of this year after several weeks of studying the lake.

Dr. April Gu: “Water and Health in the New Era – Case Study: Role of Environmental Pollutants in Antibiotic Resistance Phenomena”
Syracuse University's Civil & Environmental Engineering Speaker Series is hosting a departmental seminar this Friday, November 2nd at 3:30 p.m. in 105 Link Hall. Prof. Teng Zeng and EMPOWER trainee Changcheng Pu invited the speaker, Dr. April Gu, a professor in the School of CEE at Cornell University. Dr. Gu's research interests include but not limited to toxicology, biogeochemistry and biotechnology.
