An interdisciplinary 1-credit “water-energy” seminar is offered each semester and is integrated with a visiting lecture series. As part of the seminar, each trainee proposes to invite a speaker to campus whom they have identified as a potential professional mentor and/or internship host. The proposals describe how the visit has the potential to impact the student’s research and professional development and what events they will organize for the visit. The top four proposals each semester are selected and the four proposed speakers are invited. Students execute their proposal by facilitating the visit and writing a press release about the event, which will be disseminated through the EMPOWER webpage and SU News.
The seminar is offered each semester and is open to all interested graduate students at Syracuse University. Each semester, the seminar addresses specific research topics that span the research theme, with emphasis on integration of research in areas of policy, science communication and outreach, law, and business. Through the seminar, students gain broad exposure to all thematic areas over the course of their first two years in the program, with training in the relevance and impacts beyond the specific discipline and/or the institution.
